Why Are Australians Moving to Paraguay?
This article is based on my personal experience and publicly available information. It is not financial, legal or tax advice. If you're considering leaving Australia or changing your tax residency, always seek advice from a qualified professional familiar with your circumstances.

If you had told me five years ago that I'd be living in Paraguay, I probably would've laughed.
Like most Australians, I'd heard the name, but if you asked me to point it out on a map, I'd have struggled. It wasn't exactly on my travel bucket list, and it certainly wasn't somewhere I imagined building a life.
Fast forward to today, and Paraguay has become my home base.
I genuinely believe leaving Australia was one of the best decisions I've ever made.
That doesn't mean Australia is a bad country. Far from it. Australia gave me a fantastic upbringing, incredible opportunities, and it's where my family still lives. I'll always be grateful for that.
But over time, something changed.
The cost of living continued climbing.
Taxes became increasingly difficult to ignore.
Property prices drifted further out of reach.
Every year it felt like working harder simply meant handing over more of what I'd earned.
Eventually I started asking myself a simple question.
What if there was another way?
That question eventually led me to Paraguay.
If you're researching moving to Paraguay from Australia, this article will walk you through exactly why I chose Paraguay, what life is really like, how Australian tax residency works at a high level, and why this tiny South American country is becoming increasingly attractive for entrepreneurs, investors and remote business owners.
My Journey Started Long Before Paraguay
Leaving Australia wasn't a spontaneous decision.
By the time I discovered Paraguay, I'd already spent years travelling the world.
I'd lived throughout Asia.
I'd visited Europe.
I'd spent time in the Middle East.
Like many entrepreneurs, I was constantly comparing countries—not only for lifestyle but also for taxation, business opportunities and overall quality of life.
Dubai.
Portugal.
Georgia.
Malaysia.
Indonesia.
Thailand.
I looked at all of them.
Every country had advantages.
Some offered low tax.
Others offered fantastic infrastructure.
Some had amazing lifestyles.
But none of them quite felt like somewhere I wanted to build a long-term base.
Ironically, the country that changed my life wasn't one I'd researched.
It was one I'd almost overlooked completely.
The YouTube Video That Changed Everything
The funny part is that Paraguay found me.
Not the other way around.
One evening while travelling, I stumbled across a YouTube video from someone talking about living in Paraguay.
He wasn't a celebrity.
He wasn't selling some unrealistic dream.
He was just another entrepreneur who had built an online business and relocated overseas.
The more he explained Paraguay, the more curious I became.
Eventually I reached out.
We caught up for coffee in Asunción.
That coffee turned into multiple meetings.
Those meetings turned into a genuine friendship.
Today we still keep in touch.
Looking back, it's amazing how one random YouTube video completely altered the direction of my life.
It also reminded me why I create content today.
You genuinely never know whose life one video might change.
Why I Decided Australia Was No Longer the Right Fit
Everyone's reasons for leaving Australia are different.
Mine won't necessarily be yours.
For me, the biggest factors were:
Australia's increasingly high cost of living
High personal taxation
Rising property prices
Wanting greater financial freedom
Building long-term wealth faster
Having more control over my future
I wasn't trying to "escape" Australia.
I simply wanted more options.
As an online business owner, I realised something important.
My business wasn't tied to one country.
I could work from almost anywhere.
If that was true, why was I automatically assuming Australia had to remain my base forever?
Once I started asking that question honestly, the answer became surprisingly obvious.
The Biggest Myth About Leaving Australia
One of the biggest misconceptions I see online is this:
"If I move overseas, I stop paying Australian tax."
It's not that simple.
In fact, it's often far more complicated than people realise.
Australia doesn't simply stop treating someone as an Australian tax resident because they bought a one-way ticket overseas.
The Australian Taxation Office considers numerous factors when determining tax residency.
Exactly how those rules apply depends entirely on your circumstances.
That's why you'll hear people talk about concepts like:
where your permanent home is
where your life is centred
family connections
business interests
assets
intention
physical presence
Many people focus entirely on the famous 183-day rule.
In reality, that's only one part of a much bigger picture.
Simply spending less than six months in Australia does not automatically make someone a non-resident for tax purposes.
Likewise, living overseas doesn't automatically remove Australian tax obligations.
This is one of the biggest reasons I always encourage people to get proper professional advice before making any decisions.
The last thing you want is to accidentally trigger unexpected tax consequences because you relied on a social media video.
My Personal Decision
For me, leaving Australia wasn't just about tax.
It required genuine sacrifice.
My parents still live there.
My sisters still live there.
Many of my closest friends still live there.
Leaving meant accepting that I couldn't simply fly back whenever I wanted without understanding how those visits might affect my own circumstances.
Emotionally, that's difficult.
Financially, it was absolutely worth considering.
Everyone has to decide where that balance sits for themselves.
Arriving in Paraguay for the First Time
Eventually I booked a trip.
I flew into Asunción with fairly low expectations.
I didn't know what to expect.
Instead, I found something completely different to what I'd imagined.
Modern shopping centres.
Good cafés.
New apartment buildings.
Fast internet.
Friendly locals.
Affordable restaurants.
A surprisingly relaxed lifestyle.
Like any country, Paraguay has areas that are wealthier than others.
Many expats choose to live around the modern districts surrounding Shopping del Sol and Paseo La Galería, where you'll find apartments, cafés, gyms, restaurants and most day-to-day conveniences within walking distance.
This area immediately felt comfortable.
Not because it was flashy.
Because it was practical.
Life became incredibly simple.
Everything I needed was nearby.
I wasn't spending hours sitting in traffic.
I wasn't constantly watching money disappear on everyday expenses.
Life slowed down—in a good way.
The Cost of Living Was the Biggest Surprise
Before arriving, I'd watched plenty of YouTube videos.
Even then, I still underestimated how affordable daily life could be.
Eating out regularly didn't feel expensive.
Hiring a cleaner wasn't a luxury.
Personal services that would cost a fortune back home suddenly became affordable.
That changes the way you live.
Instead of spending your weekends cleaning your apartment, grocery shopping and meal prepping, you can spend that time building your business, learning Spanish, exercising or simply enjoying life.
That time has value.
It's one of the most underrated benefits of living somewhere with a lower cost of living.
The goal isn't simply spending less money.
It's buying back your time.
Why Paraguay Stood Out From Every Other Country
Over the years I'd researched dozens of countries.
Every destination had trade-offs.
Paraguay wasn't perfect.
No country is.
But when I looked at everything together, it consistently ranked near the top of my list.
Some of the biggest advantages included:
relatively low cost of living
straightforward residency pathways compared with many countries
growing property market
central South American location
territorial approach to taxation
friendly local culture
less crowded lifestyle
excellent value for money
Most importantly, it felt like somewhere I could actually build a long-term future rather than simply passing through as another digital nomad.
I wasn't looking for another temporary destination.
I wanted somewhere I could genuinely call home.
Paraguay's Territorial Tax System Explained
One of the biggest reasons entrepreneurs, investors and remote business owners consider Paraguay is its territorial tax system.
This is also one of the most misunderstood topics online.
You'll often hear people claim that "Paraguay is tax-free."
That isn't technically correct.
Paraguay does collect taxes. However, its tax system generally focuses on income sourced within Paraguay. Depending on your personal circumstances and how your income is earned, foreign-source income may be treated differently than it would be in countries like Australia.
The important point is this:
Your tax obligations depend on both the laws of Paraguay and the tax residency rules of any other country you may be connected to, including Australia.
This is why I always recommend speaking with a qualified accountant or tax adviser before making any decisions.
For me personally, Paraguay offered exactly what I was looking for—a country that aligned with my long-term lifestyle goals while providing a favourable environment for running an international online business.
It wasn't simply about paying less tax.
It was about building my life somewhere that rewarded entrepreneurship rather than constantly feeling like I was swimming upstream.
Why Becoming an Australian Tax Non-Resident Matters
This is probably the single biggest point I try to explain to people.
Moving to Paraguay does not automatically mean you've left Australia's tax system.
Your Australian tax residency status is determined under Australian law.
In broad terms, the Australian Taxation Office looks at a range of factors, including where you've established your life, where your permanent home is located, your ongoing ties to Australia, your intentions, and other relevant circumstances.
For many Australians, this is actually the hardest part of the entire relocation process.
Finding an apartment in Paraguay is easy.
Booking flights is easy.
Applying for residency is relatively straightforward.
Correctly structuring your move so it aligns with Australian tax residency rules is where professional advice becomes invaluable.
It's one of the reasons I built my relocation service around connecting people with the right professionals instead of encouraging shortcuts.
Why I Chose Paraguay Over Dubai, Portugal and Other Popular Destinations
People often ask why I didn't simply move to Dubai.
It's a fair question.
Dubai has world-class infrastructure, an incredible airport, excellent safety and a thriving business community.
Portugal is beautiful.
Georgia has attracted thousands of digital nomads.
Malaysia offers fantastic value.
Thailand is one of my favourite countries in the world.
I've spent time in all of them.
Yet Paraguay continued to stand out.
For me, the deciding factors were:
A significantly lower cost of living.
Affordable property prices.
A slower pace of life.
Friendly locals.
Less competition for investment opportunities.
Straightforward residency options.
A central location within South America.
A growing economy with long-term potential.
Most importantly, Paraguay still feels like an emerging market.
While much of the world has already experienced enormous property growth, Paraguay still offers opportunities that are becoming increasingly difficult to find elsewhere.
What Does It Cost to Live in Paraguay?
One of the biggest lifestyle upgrades I experienced wasn't earning more money.
It was needing less money to enjoy life.
When your monthly expenses fall dramatically, something interesting happens.
You stop feeling like you're constantly running on a treadmill.
Instead of working simply to pay bills, you begin building wealth.
While everyone's lifestyle is different, here's a rough example of everyday costs I personally experienced.
Modern Two-Bedroom Apartment
Depending on the building and location, modern apartments can often be rented for considerably less than equivalent properties in Australia's capital cities.
Many newer buildings include:
Swimming pools
Rooftop entertaining areas
24-hour security
Gyms
Underground parking
Coworking spaces
These are features that would command a premium in Sydney or Melbourne.
Dining Out
Eating at local restaurants is surprisingly affordable.
You can enjoy quality meals for a fraction of what you'd expect to pay in Australia, while international restaurants remain competitively priced compared to major Australian cities.
Household Help
One thing that surprised me was how affordable household services were.
Hiring a cleaner once a week became completely normal.
Meal preparation services were affordable.
Spanish lessons became accessible.
Instead of treating these as luxuries, they simply became part of everyday life.
The result wasn't just saving money.
It was saving time.
Investing in Paraguay
Another major reason I chose Paraguay is that I believe it's still early.
I always prefer looking for markets before everyone else discovers them.
Rather than competing in overcrowded investment markets, I'd rather identify countries that are quietly improving year after year.
Personally, my long-term plan includes continuing to invest in Paraguay.
That includes both property and local businesses.
Of course, every investment carries risk.
Markets can rise.
Markets can fall.
Regulations change.
Nothing is guaranteed.
But I prefer investing in places where I can physically spend time, understand the local market and build relationships with people on the ground.
That's exactly what Paraguay offers.
Why Cost of Living Changes Everything
One of the concepts that completely changed the way I think about money is this:
It's not only about how much you earn.
It's about how much you keep.
Imagine two people both earn exactly the same income.
The first person lives somewhere with extremely high living costs.
The second person lives somewhere significantly cheaper.
Even if their incomes are identical, the second person has dramatically more capital available to invest every single month.
Over ten or twenty years, that difference compounds.
Compound growth is incredibly powerful.
Every dollar that remains invested has the opportunity to generate returns of its own, and those returns may themselves continue compounding over time.
For me, reducing my cost of living wasn't about living cheaply.
It was about increasing the amount of money working for me rather than disappearing on everyday expenses.
That mindset completely changed how I approached building wealth.
Is Paraguay Right for Everyone?
Absolutely not.
I think it's important to be honest about that.
Paraguay won't suit everyone.
If your career requires you to be physically present in Australia, relocating overseas may not make sense.
If your entire family is in Australia and you don't want to spend long periods away from them, that emotional trade-off may simply be too great.
Some people thrive in fast-paced cities like Sydney.
Others prefer the slower pace that Paraguay offers.
Neither choice is wrong.
For me, Paraguay matched the lifestyle I wanted to build.
For someone else, another country may be a far better fit.
The goal shouldn't be finding the "best" country.
It should be finding the country that's best for you.
My Experience Helping Other Australians Move to Paraguay
After documenting my own journey, something unexpected happened.
People started reaching out.
First it was one person.
Then five.
Then dozens.
Many of them weren't looking for someone to convince them to move.
They'd already decided.
What they needed was someone who had actually been through the process.
Today I work with Australians from all walks of life—from online business owners to investors and retirees—helping them understand what relocating to Paraguay actually involves.
That includes introducing them to trusted local professionals, explaining the residency process, helping them settle into life in Asunción and sharing the lessons I wish I'd known before I made the move myself.
My goal has never been to sell people on Paraguay.
It's simply to make the process less overwhelming for those who've already decided it's the right path for them.
